Welcome!
As an owner or a manager in tourism and hospitality would you like to:
- reduce staff turnover?
- improve profits?
- future proof your business?
Successful Tourism and Hospitality operators know how. While others fall
by the wayside successful operators are actively planning ways to better
manage, motivate and retain staff because they know this will determine
their future viability and their bottom line.
Are you finding it hard to recruit new staff?
Here might be some of the reasons why:
- The labour market in South Australia is the tightest it has been for 50 years;
- The SA population is aging faster than other states.
- Tourism and hospitality is one of the biggest employers of young people in an aging population.
- Staff turnover in Tourism and Hospitality is running as high as 45 to 50% amongst front of house staff.
It's not all bad news.
Customers in SA are aging too. This is good news for business in the Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants sector. As large numbers of baby boomers get closer to retirement we can expect an increase in people holidaying and eating out. This is projected to keep the industry growing well into the future.
However, tourism and hospitality operators need to act now to ensure this growth potential is not limited by a lack of staff.
So whose responsibility is it?
Government is taking responsibility for population policy and training infrastructure to support the sector. This includes a number of significant Workforce Development Projects to plan for the sustainability of Tourism and Hospitality in SA.
Industry associations are pooling resources to promote Tourism and Hospitality in SA and to provide advice and services to their members.
Owners and managers have the most power to influence workforce development in their own enterprise. Feedback from owners, managers and staff indicates that for minimal cost enterprises can improve their staff retention by making some simple but important changes to the way they operate.
